Timeline term: variation
A variation is one of several results produced at once for the same unit, to choose from. It answers the question which one, rather than can I go back. From 4 source pages, read 2026-09-25; no maker pays to be listed.
Six editors return a set: three variations per regeneration on one, several takes of a shot on another, the same shot through different models on a third.
Variations cost like generations, since each one is one; a set of three is three generations.
1How editors use it
| Editor | What the pages say | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| Crreo AI | Each regeneration returns three variations to choose from; past work stays in Tool History | Versions |
| Google Flow | The Agent can make several variations of a video at once | Versions |
| HeyGen | Several takes of a shot are generated, swapped and the best one kept | Versions |
| MagicLight | Generating several versions and choosing the best is the suggested fix for inconsistency | Versions |
Inclusion rule. Editors whose logged statements use the term or its usual equivalent; one line each. Order. Alphabetical by tool name.
Each regeneration provides three variations — select your favorite and confirm with Replace with Selected Image.

2From an episode pipeline
The episode pipeline SceneMixer documents has its own answer to “Variation”; two lines from its pages:
Doubao Seed 2.1 Turbo is the tier every account uses for text work until you change it: it reads the script, writes with AI when you ask, and generates each episode’s storyboard, at 50% of the base text rate.

The base image is the sword as carried; drawn is a separate state image, selected for the segments where it applies. Drawing both configurations in one picture used to make the render snap the blade back into its scabbard mid-shot.
